Authority in Discipleship – Ferguson, Hirsch, & Tyson

YouTube Preview Image

Ferguson, Hirsch, and Tyson discuss why discipleship is challenging in a culture that disregards submission to authority. People often question and ask, “Who are you to tell me?” and “What’s that book to tell?”

“Our culture has one popular story which is liberation from oppression. I find a lot of young believers love the idea of Jesus as the ultimate liberator from oppression which becomes an infinite loop because the second you feel oppressed by anything – accountability in the church, requirements of Jesus – you push it off as oppression. We need “relational authority” and it takes time and trust. This is key for mission.

Every person on earth is submitted to authority. Every person. Convincing people that the Scriptures are the highest authority has much to do with the fact that Jesus submitted himself to them. Jesus was submitted to the Scriptures. Therefore, if I am to be submitted to Jesus, who is the Word incarnate, then I too must submit myself to the Scriptures.

Well, Jesus wasn’t submitted to Paul, He was submitted to the OT Law and Prophets. I don’t like Paul. Paul is too constricting.” Someone might say.

This is the most illogical statement of them all. Paul was a maverick as far as exegeting and applying the OT is concerned. Paul is MUCH more liberal than the OT is. He does away with a TON of the Law, says its all been fulfilled in Christ, therefore we submit and obey not because we have to in order to be loved by Christ, but BECAUSE we are loved by Christ, we have the power through the indwelling Spirit to submit and obey.

Jesus said “If you love me you will obey…” obedience presupposes submission. A student is not above his master. Whatever his master is submitted to, so should the student be.

True followers of Jesus are submitted followers of Jesus.
