Abandon Retirement For The Sake Of Mission

YouTube Preview Image

John Piper calls every young adult to make a radical decision now to pursue Christ as his/her greatest treasure as opposed to pursuing earthly comfort at the end of his/her life. There is too much spiritual blindness and physical suffering in the world to work in this life for your own comfort. If Christ is our treasure, then we will lay down our lives for the sake of meeting the spiritual and physical needs of the world.

The moral awakening from this video is good information.  I don’t know that I agree about attacking the concept of “retirement” when in reality it seems that much more people have a heart problem.  Most people do not have money saved for retirement anyhow.  Most are severely underfunded and might not retire in any way.

Let me add that many senior adults that are presently retired are very effective and involved in doing things for the church and reaching people for Christ.  Retired people are leading children’s classes on weekday mornings, they’re teaching Bible studies at “old folks” homes, and they’re inviting their friends to special events that happen on Thursday while the rest of the world works.  So, in their retirement, they are redeeming the time to make it fruitful for God.  I would never demonize or demoralize their efforts.

I think if many Christians could learn to live below their means they would have a lot more to give locally, nationally, and internationally.  They could probably have retirement and some significant outside giving.  Broke people have a hard time blessing people with money.

I recently came across a lady, a widow, who is over 85 years old.  Because her husband and her did take some time to plan for old age and save some money for retirement, she is not “in need” at her church.  People check in on her, but she does not have a financial need, and she lives above the poverty line, getting things that do keep her comfortable.  At her age, she’s not going back to work.  She put Proverbs 13:11 to work.  Even though her husband is gone, he helped put 1 Timothy 5:8 to work as well, providing for his wife and leaving a legacy behind that will bless her (& even their great grandchildren).

I don’t know if (during their lives) they were stingy or anything like that, but she’s giving now to others a good amount.  For that, I can’t be upset.  Too many widows have financial challenges.
